The time is late spring, 1947, on the eve of the Wyndethorne Light Opera Festival's first post-war season. Patrons of the Festival gather at Wyndethorne Grange, deep in the Sussex countryside. Traditionally, the night before the Opening is the occasion for dinner and a private recital. The guests dine at the Grange, then spend the rest of the evening in the Rehearsal Hall. This year, the Festival's favourite soprano, Maggie Clempson, reprises one of her great roles: The lead in The Goosegirl Princess.

But what of these rumours we hear from the French maid, Yvonne, regarding a wartime collaboration between the enchanting Miss Clempson and the Nazi Gestapo?
